The Cleaner Air Partnership is supporting a bill that would enhance the state’s Smog Check program, a tried-and-true method to help reduce our region’s largest source of pollution while also protecting the economy. Sacramento Assemblyman Dave Jones’ AB 616 would require annual Smog Checks for vehicles 15 years old and older, instead of the biennial checks required now.
Although cars and other mobile sources make up the bulk of the Sacramento region’s air pollution problem, influencing driving habits and other personal behaviors is a big challenge with results that can be difficult to quantify. Smog Check effectively reduces emissions from these sources, which is why enhancing the state’s program has long been a central theme of our Partnership’s actions.
Support the bill. Tell your elected state representatives and the Governor that it's important. As of late August the bill is "on suspense" in the state Senate Approrpriations Committee. It needs to pass the committee to reach the Governor's desk. Tell state Sen. President Don Perata, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and members of the Appropriations Committee that this bill is important for the state and region to meet smog goals.
